Splinter
December 18th, 2007 FunForever
A group of students from North Carolina State University are building a supercar from wood. The idea of the project called “Splinter” to explore wood as material. It’s no joke, the car has a 600 hp V8 engine and will go quite fast. The wheels are made of carefully cut and layered oak veneers strong enough to take the stress of a 2,500-pound body. The parts of the V8 are turned upside down so the exhaust vents over the top of the engine, and incorporate the muffler into the rear wing, where it can also aid downforce. This project may influence car design in the future.
