AirPOD

While some car companies are busy making and perfecting their electric and hybrid cars, MDI has made a car that runs on compressed air. The car will seat 3 people, have a range of 220 km (130miles) and a 70 kph (45 mph) speed limit. For those who don’t have a driving license the car’s speed will be limited to 45kph (30 mph). The air supply or in this case fuel can be refilled in a few minutes with an air compressor available at every gas station.

MDI declares AirPOD will be the first car to be series-produced, by the end of the first quarter of 2009 and the price is said to be very low for a car this size.

Venus Chair

Japanese designer Tokujin Yoshioka will present a chair made entirely from natural crystals at Second Nature in Tokyo later this month. The process of making such a chair is simple, I remember doing similar stuff in chemistry class when salt crystals stuck to a string. The proces sis simple yet very creative when it’s used to make furniture.

A bread slicing tool that helps to slice precise pieces or bread. I remember seeing one in a kitchen a long long time ago. It made slicing bread faster and safer, good for those who are bad with knives.

Mirror block Rubik’s Cube

For all you Rubik’s cube fans. If you’re bored with 3x3x3, 4x4x4 and 5x5x5 here’s another cube that might provide a challenge. The parts are uneven (not squares anymore) and the cube also changes shape when mixed. The video shows how it works in more details. It’s sold in Japan for about $20.

Vertical Bed

This man is not waiting for rain or Merilyn Monroe air vent effect, he is sleeping. Artist Jamie O’Shea designed a vertical bed and presented it during the Conflux Festival in NYC. He even slept on(not quite on) it for 40 minutes for 4 days during the event.

I fail to see the benefits f such a “bed”. I personally don’t know where would a person might actually use it. You can’t use it in the city because God only knows what might happen when you are asleep. Somebody might steal you stuff or loot your pockets besides I wouldn’t feel safe to sleep on a street. At night it’s too cold to sleep without a cover and it doesn’t seem like you can cover yourself with anything in that position except maybe a sleeping bad. Not to mention it’s difficult to fall asleep standing up.

Superstar

Superstar is a conceptual china town designed by MAD. A person could be born, live his life and die without living the star-city. The spires act like different districts. The Superstar produces its own resources and leaves no waste. On top of all that it is mobile.

How exactly does the city suppose to move is unclear and even if it could move around, moving something as big as this would certainly result in damages to the structure, unless of course, it is fitted with an anti-gravitational engine which would allow the star to take off and land smoothly. So I guess the next step for MAD is to design an anti-grav engine – good luck to them.
