Stirling Engines

Stirling engines contain working gas which is permanently sealed into the system, there’s no valves and no gas leaves or enters the engine. The gas inside goes though 4 processes: cooling, compression, heating and expansion. This is accomplished by moving the gas back and forth between hot and cold heat exchangers. These Stirling Engine were made by “Jos the Finch” There are more photos at his website, the link is below.

Heinola “Reading Lamps”

This public lighting project was presented at the Light Now conference in Stockholm this week by Vesa Hankonen. The project involves installing “Reading Lamps” in Library Square in the town of Heinola in Finland. Usually street lights are placed evenly and the fixtures tend to be hidden giving the main role to place. A person in the Library Square will find himself surrounded by 15 strange creatures casting light upon him. I like that they chose black for the project. It emphasizes the strange shapes of the lamps even more.

Lamponi’s Lamps

These awesome looking lamps are the creations of Italian designer Maurizio Lamponi Leopardi. I think nobody will object if I say the idea is very creative and original. These lamps can decorate and light the table at the same time - you just need to pick the lamp you want, you can get one with a plane or with a house hold object like an iron or a kettle. ‘There are many more pictures at Lamponi’s site the link is below as usual.

Laser Engravings on Food

This just goes to show that even toast can become a canvas for an artists. However, in order to make such art you’ll need something more sophisticated than ordinary paint and brush. You’ll need a laser to engrave the picture onto a piece of food come to think of it, with a laser you can engrave a picture onto almost any surface. I think the bread tastes awful after the the laser engraving.

Chanel Choco Phone

The new concept cell phone labeled Chanel Choco Phone was designed by Fred de Garilhe. It works by integrating optical fibers system that displays an image between to glass parts. This keeps the concept as light as possible. I’m not a big fan of cell phones and rarely like the new releases but this one I find very interesting. Hope they’ll put it into production

Balloon Sculptures

A long time ago when my parents were taking me to the circus I saw clowns make funny balloon animals from colorful balloons. It seems that they have improved their technique and now make sculptures using hundreds of balloons. If you need to plan your kid’s a birthday I would get some of these.

Water Cube

Beijing National Aquatic Center or Water Cube was officially opened this week. The center will host swimming and diving events at the Beijing 2008 Olympics and will seat 17,000 people. The architect did an amazing job the building looks fantastic. China is preparing for the 2008 Olympics very seriously. I can’t wait for the events to start.

Bikes from Watches

Jose Geraldo Reis Pfau’s hobby is making bikes and motorcycles out of old watches. He makes them from metal, glass, aluminum, plastic, silver and even gold pieces. He got the watches from his friend Alexandre Ranieri Peters who runs a campaign at his shop where whoever buys a new watch gives the old one as a first payment. He already has more then 200 miniature bikes in his collection and hopes to sell them one day, but not now. Here are some pictures of the bikes Jose made.

Livingstones

Livingstones is a set of pillows that resemble giant pebbles. They come in different shapes and sizes and you can even place them outside. You can create you personal landscape in the garden or do what most of us would do - play a joke on someone. Just like those kids jumping into the pillows on the photo. Looks scary if you don’t know that the rocks are actually soft.

Handblown Light Bulbs

Light bulbs are getting more attention these days. Many designers are now re-thinking their soulless design. Dylan Kehde Roelofs makes very interesting light bulbs. Well they are not exactly bulbs - they are more like sculptures. These bulbs/skulptures will last for 25,000 hours each draws about 1 amp at 12v or 24v, thus about 12 or 24 watts that won’t light up the night but it’ll light the room in a unique way.
